Community Update #6: Manufacturing is Starting!
Hi Eight supporters,
We have exciting updates to share with you as we get closer to shipping the first units. Hope you enjoy being a part of this exciting journey with us. And remember that if you have any questions or comments you can reach us at [email protected].
1. LUNA IS NOW EIGHT
Back in November we transitioned our brand name from Luna to Eight. We launched Luna at the end of January 2015, and the name Luna served us well for a while. But after a year of being ‘in the market’ we have realized that Luna is a name that is loved not only by us, but also by many other companies – particularly in the sleep industry. We want to ensure that when our product hits the shelves it is not confused or misrepresented, and that our customers can own a product with a unique brand positioning in the market. Our new name, Eight, gives us room to grow. We love the name Eight because of what it means in the world of sleep and how it connects to the values we stand for.
You can read the full story on this name change here.
An important thing to highlight is that the product has not changed. It is still the same product with the same features, design, and even the same price. When you receive your product in February you will see the same product, just branded with the name Eight.
You may have noticed that our website is now eightsleep.com, and our Facebook and Twitter account names have changed as well. You will now be able to reach us at [email protected], and our promise of listening and responding to your requests stays the same.
2. WE START SHIPPING IN FEBRUARY
We are on track to begin shipping in February 2016 (next month!). We can’t wait to deliver the first Eight Covers to our early backers, and receive your feedback on the experience. You can read the full details on our progress towards shipping in the rest of this update.
Please note that back in September 25, 2015 we sent out a backer update via email which included an updated shipping timeline and explained the causes for the adjustment in delivery dates (see that announcement here). Please refer to the table below for the adjusted shipping dates:
If you have not received our previous community updates please email us at [email protected] to make sure you are in our email list. Please also check your spam or trash folders as it might have been archived by your email client.
CONFIRMING OR UPDATING YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS
By January 30th we will reach out to all Indiegogo campaign backers via email to confirm or update your shipping address (backers that purchased Eight between January 27 and March 26). It is extremely important that you answer to that email so your cover can ship when ready and avoid delays. Please make sure to add [email protected] to your email contacts so our emails don’t go to your spam folder.
3. FINAL COVERS ARE OUT FROM THE FACTORY
We received the first covers from our manufacturer that are ready for customers. These covers are the final version, and they look great as you can see in the pictures below.
4. PLASTICS AND CABLES FROM THE MANUFACTURER ARE HERE
The first plastics and cables out of our manufacturer’s facility have arrived. These plastics are for the smart box and connector box. They look great and feel great at touch, and they are ready to be used for the first customers’ units. We have included some pictures below.
5. V5 OF THE BOARDS HAVE ARRIVED
The 5th version of the boards have arrived and are being tested. The boards are the “brain” of our product. The one inside the control box is responsible – among the others – of processing the data and to perform a first layer of data analysis. The other board is responsible for controlling the heating elements and the sensor strip.
As we move ahead over the next month, we will continue to do new versions of the boards to improve functionalities and guarantee the best performance and we will use the new boards in the first units we ship.
6. FIRST WORKING SENSOR STRIPS ASSEMBLED BY OUR MANUFACTURER
The sensor strip was finally completed after a long period of testing and iteration to make sure that it would not deteriorate over time and to get the signal clarity we wanted to achieve. The sensor strip is fundamental because it is responsible for picking up the sleep data. Part of the long period of iterations was due also to the choice of fabrics and construction of the sensor itself which needed to be extremely resistant, yet imperceptible by the user who lays on it.
7. PRODUCT CERTIFICATION HAS STARTED
A very important step of being consumer-ready is certifying our product under UL safety standards. UL is a worldwide safety certification company, responsible for certifying all consumer electronics in the market. This certification means that UL has tested samples of the product and determined that it meets requirements based on nationally recognized standards for safety.
Once the Eight cover receives this certification, it will be ready to ship to consumers. And we expect this to be completed in time for our first February shipment.
8. PACKAGING MANUFACTURING HAS STARTED
We have finalized the design of the product’s packaging. We decided to go for a simple and elegant solution that protects all the elements of the Eight Sleep System during the shipment. Below is a sneak peak of the packaging’s design.
The biggest challenge was the size of the cover when folded because of its dimension. Our box ended up being 19 inches by 15 inches, so we had to work with our packaging design company to find materials that were durable but also affordable. And we are really happy with the result.
The purchase order is in for all the materials, and manufacturing of the packaging will start this month in China.
9. MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT IS ON ITS WAY
Our marketing team has spent the last couple of months focused on redesigning our mobile app based on the feedback from our beta testers, and the result is a fully redesigned experience. Below is a before and after look at the app’s main dashboard.
The development for the iOS and Android versions is already underway, with a first version scheduled to be ready by the end of this month.
10. TEAM IS GROWING SO WE CAN MOVE FASTER
We are really excited to share with you the latest additions to our team, who have joined us with the challenge of bringing Eight to market as the best product in sleep technology.
- Our new Head of Manufacturing comes from PCH where he was product lead for Apple products.
- Our new Director of Engineering was formerly Director of Firmware at Basis.
- Our new Senior Data Scientist was formerly at Basis where he developed their sleep algorithms from scratch.
Having such talented individuals in our team is going to strengthen our work and positively impact the quality of our product. We can’t wait to see what we will achieve together.
