Community Update #5: Tooling Has Begun In China!
Hi Eight supporters,
We have exciting updates to share with you in our progress to get Eight into your homes. Hope you enjoy being a part of this exciting journey with us! And remember that if you have any questions or comments you can reach us at [email protected]
1. ENGINEERING AND OPERATIONS TEAM HAVE MOVED TO CHINA
Earlier this month the entire engineering and operations team, -including Matteo, our CEO – moved to Shenzhen, China to focus on the product manufacturing for the next months.
The team is now based out of a co-working space in Shenzhen’s Futian district. We have also hired two local contractors (George and Ben) with more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing in China. They are managing the work we are doing with contract manufacturers and vetting the vendors.
The team is excited to be on the ground, talking every day with contract manufacturers and suppliers to ensure Eight delivers a great experience to all our supporters. Below are some pictures of the team at our office in China and during visits to the different contract manufacturers who will be doing the production of Eight.
2. TOOLING HAS BEGUN! A BIG STEP FOR MANUFACTURING
We kicked-off the tooling of our smart box and connector with a plastic injection molding company based in the Dongguan area. The company has a very modern facility with an internal painting shop with a controlled environment. The first parts will come out in just 4 weeks, and the 3 weeks after that will be used to refine the tooling.
Why is tooling important? In this tooling process, the manufacturer will be creating the molds that are used to mass-produce all the plastic components of Eight (smart box, power management box, and sensor box). Submitting for tooling is an essential step in getting ready for and the success of our manufacturing process.
With tooling started we finally kick off the manufacturing process, staying on track for the February shipment.
3. MECHANICAL DESIGN HAS BEEN FINALIZED
Over the past weeks we simplified the mechanical design, which led to components built with less parts and less screws that look better and are easier to build (higher quality).
Thanks to this extraordinary work by our engineering team, we locked the mechanical design of all the parts of the enclosures and all the cables and connectors, and we have released for tooling. In the image below you can see all our mechanical parts that have been submitted for tooling.
4. DESIGNING THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
We have finalized the documentation of the production process of the product. We are producing highly detailed diagrams to facilitate the work of the manufacturer in China. These detailed diagrams of each component of the product minimize the risk of error when building all the parts. You can see one of the diagrams below.
5. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING UPDATE
We continued to improve our electrical engineering design and we updated our boards to reflect the design of the final enclosures that are being tooled. We are testing this new version (v5) of the boards and we are making final modifications that we see necessary after the tests are performed.
6. COVER SETUP AND ORIENTATION TESTING
We have also conducted more usability tests with beta testers. We have gathered feedback on the installation and every day use of Eight. Thanks to the feedback from beta testers, we have identified the need to place certain markers of orientation on the cover, so that you setup Eight in the proper way when taking it out of the box – with the head placed correctly by the headboard of your bed.
7. THE EIGHT SMART ALARM RINGTONES
We have been working in conjunction with a sound engineer and sleep scientists to develop custom wake up sounds that are being tailored to match different sleep rhythms and emotions. Even if you are a heavy sleeper, these ringtones are guaranteed to wake you up feeling refreshed. We can’t wait to share them with you once our app is released!
8. SHIPPING IN FEBRUARY 2016
On September 25 we sent out a backer update via email which included an updated shipping timeline and explained the causes for the adjustment in delivery dates. In order to accommodate the time needed for tooling, the original timeline of shipping in November has been adjusted and the first Eights are set to begin shipping at the end of February 2016. Please refer to the table below for the adjusted shipping dates:
If you have not received our previous community updates please email us at [email protected] to make sure you are in our email list. Please also check your spam or trash folders as it might have been archived by your email client.
The team continues to work day and night to make sure that we meet the new shipping timeline and that the Eight experience is better than imagined. We can’t reiterate enough the appreciation we have for the support we have received so far. Thank you, as always, for helping us make Eight a reality. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns via email at [email protected] or twitter @eightsleep.
All the best,
The Eight Team
